Theme in The Thought Fox by Ted Hughes

The Thought Fox which is included in the collection Hawk in the Rain can be regarded as one of the finest among Hughes's animal poems. It actually defines his early poetic process: not to describe but to evoke.

His loneliness above a blank sheet of paper is like the night empty habitable. As the snow settles into the night, so the image of the fox settles into his solitude, it enters ' the dark hole of the head'.
